Why it matters
Girls in South Sudan face barriers that enrolment numbers alone do not show: early marriage, unpaid care work, safety on the way to school and expectations about who education is for. Gender Transformative Education goes beyond counting girls in school to change the norms, power relations and structures behind those barriers.
What we do
Community dialogue
The Gender Action Learning System (GALS), including tools such as the Vision Road Journey and Gender Balance Tree, brings households and communities into conversations about girls' education.
Life skills clubs
Peer-led school clubs that build adolescents' agency, social-emotional skills and confidence, especially for girls.
Gender-responsive schools
Training for parent-teacher associations, school management committees and head teachers to lead gender-responsive, conflict-sensitive School Improvement Plans.
Gender-responsive teaching
Teacher development that helps classrooms work for girls as well as boys.
